On April 23, 2024, we introduced a sensory bag program at the Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum! This new offering was developed by the Ottawa Museum Network for their member museums, to be implemented as a specialized resource for visitors. These backpacks are aimed at helping individuals with sensory sensitivities better navigate and manage external stimuli within a museum environment.

The backpacks at the Diefenbunker come complete with:

  • Ear defenders (available in three sizes)
  • Sunglasses (available in child and adult sizes)
  • Sensory/fidget toys
  • Colour communication cards (can be worn on a lanyard)
  • The Diefenbunker’s photo scavenger hunt

You may select one of each of the items for your bag to be used for free during your museum visit. Bags are available as backpacks to be carried or as adaptive bags for wheelchairs. You can call in advance of your visit to reserve a sensory bag, or you may request one upon arrival on your next visit underground.

We are pleased to take part in this innovative program and are eager to provide a more inclusive and enriching museum experience for all.

Try a sensory bag today and let your senses guide you through Canada’s Cold War story.
