This national historic site of Canada is an underground nuclear bunker, located just 35 km from Ottawa, that was built in secrecy during the height of the Cold War. As the Central Emergency Headquarters, the bunker was meant to house 535 key government and military officials to ensure continuity of government in the event of a nuclear attack on the country.
Tours of this unique facility take visitors through historic government workspaces, living quarters, and cryptographic areas that are equipped with vintage maps, rotary telephones, and early-age computers. Highlights include the War Cabinet Room, the Prime Minister’s Suite, the Medical Centre, and the Bank of Canada Vault.
