Presentation Topic:

Though the Cold War began shortly after the end of the Second World War, as the wartime alliance between the Soviet Union and the United States gave way to a superpower competition, arguably, for Canada, the Cold War began in earnest during the Korean War. During this first “hot war” of the Korean War, postwar discourse shifted from that of veterans resettlement, economic expansion, and postwar life to a broader story about atomic anxiety, greater defence spending, and deterrence that would last more or less without interruption until the end of the Cold War.

In this talk, Andrew Burtch will present on the history of the Korean War, its place within Canada, and its role as a catalyst for a new and ominous phase of the Cold War.

Speaker Bio:

Andrew Burtch is the Canadian War Museum’s Post-1945 Historian. As the historian responsible for Gallery 4: The Cold War, Peacekeeping, and Contemporary Operations, he has developed displays about Canada’s involvement in the Korean War, military medicine, United Nations peacekeeping, and the Afghanistan War. His book, Give Me Shelter: The Failure of Canada’s Cold War Civil Defence, received the 2012 C.P. Stacey Award for Canadian military history.
