In this series of free talks\, hear from experts on a variety of relevant topics to bring you new perspectives on Cold War themes and events. \nSession 1\nDate: Thursday\, September 28\, 2023\nTime: 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. ET\nTopic: “When the Skies Rained Boxes”: Northern Canadians and Continental Defence during the Cold War\nSpeaker: P. Whitney Lackenbauer\, Ph.D.\nCost: Free \nDetails:\n– Hosted virtually on Zoom. Advance registration is required to receive the Zoom link.\n– Includes a presentation followed by a Q&A\, for a total of approximately one hour.\n– Session will be recorded for educational purposes. \nPresentation Overview:\n“When the Skies Rained Boxes”: Northern Canadians and Continental Defence during the Cold War \nThis talk will explore aspects of how “military modernization” affected Northern Canadians\, and particularly Indigenous peoples\, during the Cold War. Topics will include the interplay between security and sovereignty priorities\, various socio-economic and political impacts of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line\, and the Canadian Rangers as a uniquely Canadian form of military service in remote Northern regions. \nSpeaker Bio:\nP. Whitney Lackenbauer\, Ph.D.\, is Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in the Study of the Canadian North and a Professor in the School for the Study of Canada at Trent University\, Ontario\, Canada. He is network lead of the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN) and is Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group. He has (co-)written or (co-)edited more than sixty books and more than one hundred academic articles and book chapters\, many of which explore Indigenous–military relations and Arctic issues.
