Relive the heart-stopping story of the Cuban Missile Crisis through the eyes of Canada’s 13th Prime Minister\, John “Dief the Chief” Diefenbaker. Travel with “Dief the Chief” through the Diefenbunker into the War Cabinet Room as he and the world watch the USA and USSR face off in history’s closest brush with nuclear war. Hear in his own words how “Dief the Chief’s” rocky relationship with President John F. Kennedy played an extraordinary role in Canadian and American relations and how each influenced the other’s policies. \nJoin “Dief the Chief” as he navigates his way through the ultimate crisis that could see neighbours on both sides fight a nuclear war with Canada\, literally in the middle. The personal cost to him will be great as he deals with a demanding president\, a divided cabinet\, and a fierce opposition. \nWritten and performed by Pierre Brault with Peter Haworth as John Diefenbaker. This play is an artistic interpretation of historical events. \nPierre Brault is an Ottawa-based multi-award-winning actor\, playwright\, and stand-up comedian. Decorate an egg at our craft station\, plant some seeds to take home with you\, and snap a few photos in our themed photo booth. You can also participate in our visual scavenger hunt and other games including giant Jenga\, a bean bag toss\, and pin the tail on the bunny. Don’t forget to pick up your goodie bag along the way! \nHop on over to the Diefenbunker — we’re egg-cited to see you! \nDate: Saturday\, March 30\, 2024 \nTime:\n> Entry time slots are every 15 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.\n> The last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m.\n> Please arrive during your scheduled entry time. Participate in these historic activities\, with a modern twist — snow sculpting\, snow painting\, a tug of war challenge\, or traversing the snowy trails of the scenic bunker hillside. Warm up indoors with free hot chocolate or by exploring a temporary exhibit highlighting the traditions of the Winter Carnival through stories\, videos\, and artifacts. \nOutdoor activities are free. DESCRIPTION:Our signature annual Whisky Tasting Fundraiser returns to the Diefenbunker this year. Authors Christabelle Sethna and Steve Hewitt discuss their book\, Just Watch Us: RCMP Surveillance of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Cold War Canada\, and the declassified RCMP Security Service documents they used to research and understand the efforts of a predominantly male police force to spy on the Women’s Liberation Movement from the 1960s to the 1980s. \nSpeaker Bios:\nDr. Christabelle Sethna\, Ph.D. is a historian and Full Professor in the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies\, University of Ottawa\, teaching courses on feminist methodologies\, anti-racism\, colonialism\, and critical animal studies. She has published widely on sex education\, contraception\, and abortion transnational histories\, with a focus on Canada. She is the co-author or co-editor of the following books: Animal Metropolis (2017\, UCalgary)\, Just Watch Us (2018\, UMcGill)\, Abortion Across Borders (2019\, Johns Hopkins)\, and No Place for the State (2020\, UBC). Her research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and she is currently Principal Investigator for a SSHRC-funded project about women’s transnational travel for abortion services\, 1960s–1990s. \nSteve Hewitt is an Associate Professor in North American history at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. He has written extensively on topics related to security and intelligence in the past and present. His past books include Spying 101: The RCMP’s Secret Activities at Canadian Universities\, 1917-1997 and\, co-authored with Christabelle Sethna\, Just Watch Us: RCMP Surveillance of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Cold War Canada. DESCRIPTION:Our annual Toddlers’ Halloween Hunt is back! Bring your little ones for a day of fun to get them into the Halloween spirit.  \nCome dressed in your favourite costume and explore hidden Halloween surprises in our 100\,000-square-foot underground bunker that will be decked out for the occasion. Enjoy the fun atmosphere\, decorations\, and perfect photo ops as you search throughout the bunker to find treats\, crafts\, and other themed activities.  \nYou won’t want to miss out on this fa-boo-lous event!  \nDate: Wednesday\, October 25 to Friday\, October 27\, 2023\nTime: Reserve your tickets in advance\, as there are designated time slots and limited spots available. Entry time slots are every 30 minutes between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The event ends at 12:30 p.m. \nCost: $12 per person; Children 5 years old and under are free. Parking is always free! \nDetails: Upon arrival\, you will receive information on the activities. Decorate a take-home treat bag\, get creative with a paper monster craft\, try out a bean bag game\, or groove to a dance party with colourful lights and Halloween music. Children can also find a few stations located throughout the bunker with small prizes and treats. All treats are nut-free.  \n\n  \n*To ensure the safety of visitors\, there is a limited capacity for each time slot\, and activities are spread out across our 100\,000-square-foot\, four-storey facility. Advance registration is required to receive the Zoom link.\n– Includes a presentation followed by a Q&A\, for a total of approximately one hour.\n– Session will be recorded for educational purposes. \nPresentation Overview:\nHow Popular Musicians Addressed the Cold War in the US and Canada \nThis talk will begin with an overview of the 2021 book Atomic Tunes\, which shows how popular musicians from the 1940s to the 1990s expressed their views on a number of Cold War topics such as the nuclear arms race\, communism vs. capitalism\, the proxy wars\, civil defense\, bomb shelters\, McCarthyism\, and the Berlin Wall. Then\, hear an analysis of the lyrics of several songs by the Canadian progressive/heavy metal band Rush. Their drummer and lyricist Neil Peart addressed Cold War topics frequently in his lyrics\, especially in the early 1980s when the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was at a peak. \nSpeaker Bios:\nJoanna Smolko earned a B.A. in Music from Covenant College (2000)\, an M.M. in Theory and Composition from the University of Georgia (2002)\, and a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh (2011). She teaches various music courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia. Her areas of research and writing include American popular music from the 19th and 20th centuries\, American folk music\, film music\, and the intersections between American history and music. She was a contributing editor for the 2nd edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music (Oxford University Press\, 2013)\, and wrote and revised numerous articles. Some of her publications include “Southern-Fried Foster: Representing Race and Place in Looney Tunes Cartoons\,” American Music 30:3 (2012)\, coediting Stephen Collins Foster: 60 Favorite Songs (Mel Bay\, 2010) with Stephen Saunders\, and coauthoring the “Living in Harmony” chapter from Anxiety Muted (Oxford University Press\, 2015) with Tim Smolko. In 2021 she edited the volume Christian Sacred Music in the Americas (Rowman & Littlefield) with Andrew Shenton. \nTim Smolko is an academic librarian and musicologist. He earned a M.L.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007 and an M.A. in Musicology from the University of Georgia in 2011 where he currently works as a cataloger in the Main Library. Decorate a butterfly or an egg at our craft station\, plant some seeds to take home with you\, and participate in a scavenger hunt for camouflaged eggs and flowers. \nJoin us underground for some springtime family fun. We’re egg-cited to see you! \nDate: Friday\, April 7\, 2023 \nTime:\n> Entry time slots are every 30 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.\n> The last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m.\n> Please arrive during your scheduled entry time. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us virtually this fall to hear from experts about a variety of relevant Cold War themes and events.  \nDr. Andrew Burtch discusses Canada\, the Cold War\, and the Korean War as a part of the 2022 Cold War Speaker Series hosted by the Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum. \n\nDate: Thursday\, November 17\, 2022\nTime: 7:00 p.m.\nPrice: Free \nDetails:\n– Please RSVP at least 48 hours in advance in order to receive the join link.\n– Virtual attendance via Zoom. \nPresentation Topic:\nThough the Cold War began shortly after the end of the Second World War\, as the wartime alliance between the Soviet Union and the United States gave way to a superpower competition\, arguably\, for Canada\, the Cold War began in earnest during the Korean War. During this first “hot war” of the Korean War\, postwar discourse shifted from that of veterans resettlement\, economic expansion\, and postwar life to a broader story about atomic anxiety\, greater defence spending\, and deterrence that would last more or less without interruption until the end of the Cold War. \nIn this talk\, Andrew Burtch will present on the history of the Korean War\, its place within Canada\, and its role as a catalyst for a new and ominous phase of the Cold War. \nSpeaker Bio:\nAndrew Burtch is the Canadian War Museum’s Post-1945 Historian. As the historian responsible for Gallery 4: The Cold War\, Peacekeeping\, and Contemporary Operations\, he has developed displays about Canada’s involvement in the Korean War\, military medicine\, United Nations peacekeeping\, and the Afghanistan War. His book\, Give Me Shelter: The Failure of Canada’s Cold War Civil Defence\, received the 2012 C.P. Join us for a day of family-friendly fun to get into the Halloween spirit. \nCome dressed in your favourite costume and explore a 100\,000-square-foot underground museum with your little ones. Search for stations throughout the bunker to find treats\, crafts\, and other fun activities. Keep an eye out for hidden Halloween surprises along the way! \nYou won’t want to miss this fa-boo-lous event! \n\nDate: Wednesday\, October 26\, 2022 to Friday\, October 28\, 2022\nTime: Entry time slots are every 30 minutes between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The last entry time is 12:30 p.m.\, and the event ends at 1:00 p.m.\nPrice: $7 per person; Children 5 years old and under are free; Parking is always free. \nDetails: Upon arrival\, you will receive information on the activities. Participate in pin the nose on the jack-o’-lantern\, a dance party with colourful lights\, and a paper bat craft. Children can also find staff members stationed at a few locations throughout the bunker to receive candy or small toys. \n*To ensure safety of visitors\, there is a limited capacity for each time slot\, and activities are spread out across our 100\,000-square-foot\, four-storey facility. Staff at each activity station will be wearing masks\, and treats will be provided using tongs. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us virtually this fall to hear from experts about a variety of relevant Cold War themes and events.  \nMichelle Douglas and Christos Pantieras discuss the LGBT Purge as a part of the Cold War Speaker Series hosted by the Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum. \nDate: Thursday\, October 6\, 2022\nTime: 7:00 p.m.\nPrice: Free \nDetails:\n– Please RSVP at least 48 hours in advance in order to receive the join link.\n– Virtual attendance via Zoom. \nPresentation Topic:\nThe LGBT Purge: Yesterday\, Today\, and Tomorrow through Personal Experience and Visual Art.\nAs the 2022 Artist-in-Residence\, created Christos Pantieras a multi-layered installation about “Justin Case”\, a comic character created by Civil Defence Canada to promote preparedness and safety. Pantieras will discuss how his reinterpretation of the character portrays anxiety\, distrust\, and internal struggle and how he connected this to the LGBT Purge. \nSpeaker Bios:\nMichelle Douglas is the Executive Director of the LGBT Purge Fund\, a not-for-profit corporation that was set up to manage a portion of the funds that emerged from the class action settlement for LGBT members of the Canadian Armed Forces\, the RCMP and the federal public service who were systematically discriminated against. Michelle Douglas served as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1986 to 1989. She was honourably discharged from the military in 1989 as a result of the Purge. She launched a landmark legal challenge against the military’s discriminatory policies against LGBT service members that resulted in the ending of Canada’s discriminatory policies in 1992. Her experience in the military was the start of 30 years of social justice and human rights activism. \nChristos Pantieras is from Ottawa\, Ontario. He received an M.F.A. in sculpture from York University\, and a B.F.A. from the University of Ottawa. Pantieras explores themes of communication\, relationships\, and intimacy. Sourcing online language from emails\, text messages\, and gay hook-up apps\, he manipulates the digital word through analog processes. His work amplifies the resonance of a lost connection while blurring the boundaries between virtual space and physical space. The duck-and-cover generation saw it as a satire on nuclear issues and Cold War thinking. Subsequent generations\, removed from the film’s historical moment\, came to view it as a quasi-documentary about an unfathomable secret world. \nSean M. Maloney uses Dr. Strangelove and other genre classics like Fail Safe to investigate a curious pop cultural contradiction. Nuclear crisis films repeatedly portrayed the failures of the Cold War’s deterrent system. Yet\, the system worked. What does this inconsistency tell us about the genre? What does it tell us about the deterrent system\, for that matter? \nBlending film analysis with Cold War history\, Maloney looks at how the celluloid crises stacks up against reality — or at least as much of reality as we can reconstruct from these films with confidence. DESCRIPTION:The Easter Bunny let us in on a secret — the Diefenbunker is on its list of stops this year! Join us underground for some springtime fun. \n\n\n\nYou’re invited to explore the bunker as you search for signs of spring that the Easter Bunny has left behind\, like camouflaged eggs and flowers. Participate in other family-friendly activities like hopscotch and a bean bag toss\, or try your hand at some themed crafts. Treat bags are available once you complete the activities. \nHop on over to the Diefenbunker for a day of family fun! We’re egg-cited to see you. \nHere’s what you need to know: \n\nDate: Friday\, April 15\, 2022\nTickets must be purchased in advance\, as there are designated time slots and limited spots available.\n$12 per person; Infants under 2 years old are free.\nEntry time slots are every 30 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m. The last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m. If you miss your entry time\, you may need to wait outside the museum due to capacity limits.\nUpon arrival\, you will be given a scavenger hunt checklist and information on the activities.\nAt the end of your visit\, you will receive a treat bag (nut-free\, and while supplies last).\nAll items on the scavenger hunt are visual and do not involve picking up or holding any objects. There are no physical eggs or chocolates in the scavenger hunt.
