DESCRIPTION:Spring has sprung! Join us underground at the Diefenbunker for some springtime family fun. \nYou’re invited to explore our four-storey Cold War bunker while searching for signs of spring. Participate in our scavenger hunt for camouflaged Easter eggs and flowers\, decorate a butterfly or an egg at our craft station\, and find small treats along the way. You can also take home a memento of the day with a fun photo booth. \nThis year\, our groundhog Bunker Buddy\, Pudge\, has brought a friend! Keep an eye out for a special visitor looking to collect the eggs they left behind. \nHop on over to the Diefenbunker — we’re egg-cited to see you! \n\nDate: Saturday\, April 19\, 2025 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, with designated entry time slots  \n\nEntry time slots are every 15 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.\nThe last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m.\nPlease arrive during your scheduled entry time. In 2023\, women made up only 16.5% of Canada’s military. \nThis panel discussion will feature servicewomen who entered the Canadian Forces during and following the Cold War\, a tumultuous time within Canada’s military structure. Their insights and stories will explore the struggles and triumphs of women in Canada’s military\, and what the future will hold with the hopes of increasing representation of women in the Canadian Armed Forces. \nAbout the speakers\nKaren McCrimmon (Moderator)\nKaren A. McCrimmon is the member of provincial parliament (MPP) for Kanata—Carleton. She previously served as the Member of Parliament for Kanata—Carleton from 2015 to 2021. After a 31-year military career\, Karen retired as a lieutenant colonel. She was the first female navigator and the first woman to command a Canadian Forces air force squadron. \nKaren was born in Weston\, Ontario and grew up in Timmins\, and Windsor\, Ontario. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Windsor in Russian and linguistics\, and originally wanted to work in Canada’s diplomatic corps. Karen joined the Regular Force in 1980 and became an air navigator\, the first female to gain such a qualification. In 1995\, she was made a member of the Order of Military Merit. She did a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2004 where she was responsible for NATO Airlift Co-ordination. She retired from the Forces in 2006. \nAs a Member of Parliament\, Karen served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Veterans Affairs\, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety\, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transportation. She was also Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence. \nDeanna (Dee) M. Brasseur (Panelist)\nDee Brasseur enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1972 as an Administrative Clerk. Commissioned in 1973 under the Officer Candidate Training Program as an Air Weapons controller. When the Canadian Forces announced a trial program in 1979 to employ women in the pilot career field\, Dee volunteered and successfully graduated as one of the first three women to earn their wings in 1981. \nShe was the first woman jet pilot instructor assigned to 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (2CFFTS)\, Moose Jaw\, Saskatchewan (1981-85) and the first woman pilot to be awarded a Flight Commander position as the T-33 Flight Commander with Base Flight Cold Lake\, Alberta (1986-88). \nIn 1988 Brasseur was one of the first two women pilots selected to train as jet fighter pilots. She progressed through 419 Squadron Basic Fighter Training on the CF-5 Freedom Fighter\, and 410 Squadron Operational Training Unit to fly the CF-18 Hornet. She served as a line pilot and Squadron Plans Officer with 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron\, Cold Lake\, Alberta (1989-90). Major Brasseur was then assigned as the first woman Military Aircraft Accident Investigator\, and became the Senior Staff Officer at the Department of National Defence Headquarters responsible for supervising all Canadian Forces Jet Trainers and Fighter Aircraft. \nRecognized on several occasions\, Dee was honoured to plant a Canadian Maple Tree in the 99’s International Forest of Friendship in 1998; inducted into Women in Aviation Pioneer Hall of Fame in 2007; recognized by the Northern Lights Aero Foundation as a Canadian Pioneer in Aviation and officially recognized by the government for her contributions in Canadian aviation\, she was inducted as a Member of the Order of Canada in February 1999. \nRebecca Patterson (Panelist)\nRear-Admiral (Retired) The Honourable Rebecca Patterson\, OMM MSM CD\, is a 34-year Canadian Armed Forces veteran. \nAs a provider and executive health leader\, she worked in military healthcare delivery\, education\, training\, and operational and strategic planning\, both at home and on international deployments. On promotion to Flag (General) Officer\, she was the first person with a military nursing background ever to lead at that rank. \nSenator Patterson has led in many different domains in the Canadian Armed Forces\, from serving as the Defence Champion for Women\, addressing sexual misconduct and leading culture change efforts in the Forces\, to commanding Canada’s 14th health system\, the Canadian Forces Health Service at the height of the COVID 19 pandemic. She has also been a strong advocate to transform the culture\, eliminate harmful behaviour\, and re-establish public trust in the Canadian military. \nSenator Patterson was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada in 2014\, and was inducted as an Officer in the Order of Military Merit in 2018. She is also the recipient of numerous other honours and awards\, including the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in Health Sciences for Ontario College Graduates\, and the Niagara College Canada Distinguished Alumni Award. \nThe first military veteran who is a woman appointed to the Senate of Canada\, Senator Patterson serves as Deputy Leader of the Canadian Senators Group\, is a Member of the Senate Standing Committee on National Security\, Defence and Veterans Affairs and is Chair of the Sub-committee on Veterans Affairs. Senator Patterson provides a voice for those who serve\, and have served\, in the Canadian Armed Forces and their families. She is an active supporter of Canada’s role in NATO and serves on the Executive Committee of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association\, fostering parliamentarians’ understanding of the security issues and concerns of member nations. No walk-up visitors will be admitted.\n– Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your designated entry time for the start of the tour. Late arrivals may not be admitted.\n– Highlights Tours are offered in English\, with select French tours available.\n– There will be no option for general admission or self-guided exploration of the museum — only the scheduled Highlights Tours.\n– The Gift Shop will be open. Decorate an egg at our craft station\, plant some seeds to take home with you\, and snap a few photos in our themed photo booth. You can also participate in our visual scavenger hunt and other games including giant Jenga\, a bean bag toss\, and pin the tail on the bunny. Don’t forget to pick up your goodie bag along the way! \nHop on over to the Diefenbunker — we’re egg-cited to see you! \nDate: Saturday\, March 30\, 2024 \nTime:\n> Entry time slots are every 15 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.\n> The last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m.\n> Please arrive during your scheduled entry time. Authors Christabelle Sethna and Steve Hewitt discuss their book\, Just Watch Us: RCMP Surveillance of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Cold War Canada\, and the declassified RCMP Security Service documents they used to research and understand the efforts of a predominantly male police force to spy on the Women’s Liberation Movement from the 1960s to the 1980s. \nSpeaker Bios:\nDr. Christabelle Sethna\, Ph.D. is a historian and Full Professor in the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies\, University of Ottawa\, teaching courses on feminist methodologies\, anti-racism\, colonialism\, and critical animal studies. She has published widely on sex education\, contraception\, and abortion transnational histories\, with a focus on Canada. She is the co-author or co-editor of the following books: Animal Metropolis (2017\, UCalgary)\, Just Watch Us (2018\, UMcGill)\, Abortion Across Borders (2019\, Johns Hopkins)\, and No Place for the State (2020\, UBC). Her research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and she is currently Principal Investigator for a SSHRC-funded project about women’s transnational travel for abortion services\, 1960s–1990s. \nSteve Hewitt is an Associate Professor in North American history at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. He has written extensively on topics related to security and intelligence in the past and present. His past books include Spying 101: The RCMP’s Secret Activities at Canadian Universities\, 1917-1997 and\, co-authored with Christabelle Sethna\, Just Watch Us: RCMP Surveillance of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Cold War Canada. Enjoy the fun atmosphere\, decorations\, and perfect photo ops as you search throughout the bunker to find treats\, crafts\, and other themed activities.  \nYou won’t want to miss out on this fa-boo-lous event!  \nDate: Wednesday\, October 25 to Friday\, October 27\, 2023\nTime: Reserve your tickets in advance\, as there are designated time slots and limited spots available. Advance registration is required to receive the Zoom link.\n– Includes a presentation followed by a Q&A\, for a total of approximately one hour.\n– Session will be recorded for educational purposes. \nPresentation Overview:\nHow Popular Musicians Addressed the Cold War in the US and Canada \nThis talk will begin with an overview of the 2021 book Atomic Tunes\, which shows how popular musicians from the 1940s to the 1990s expressed their views on a number of Cold War topics such as the nuclear arms race\, communism vs. capitalism\, the proxy wars\, civil defense\, bomb shelters\, McCarthyism\, and the Berlin Wall. Then\, hear an analysis of the lyrics of several songs by the Canadian progressive/heavy metal band Rush. Their drummer and lyricist Neil Peart addressed Cold War topics frequently in his lyrics\, especially in the early 1980s when the nuclear arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was at a peak. \nSpeaker Bios:\nJoanna Smolko earned a B.A. in Music from Covenant College (2000)\, an M.M. in Theory and Composition from the University of Georgia (2002)\, and a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh (2011). She teaches various music courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia. Her areas of research and writing include American popular music from the 19th and 20th centuries\, American folk music\, film music\, and the intersections between American history and music. She was a contributing editor for the 2nd edition of The Grove Dictionary of American Music (Oxford University Press\, 2013)\, and wrote and revised numerous articles. Some of her publications include “Southern-Fried Foster: Representing Race and Place in Looney Tunes Cartoons\,” American Music 30:3 (2012)\, coediting Stephen Collins Foster: 60 Favorite Songs (Mel Bay\, 2010) with Stephen Saunders\, and coauthoring the “Living in Harmony” chapter from Anxiety Muted (Oxford University Press\, 2015) with Tim Smolko. In 2021 she edited the volume Christian Sacred Music in the Americas (Rowman & Littlefield) with Andrew Shenton. \nTim Smolko is an academic librarian and musicologist. He earned a M.L.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007 and an M.A. in Musicology from the University of Georgia in 2011 where he currently works as a cataloger in the Main Library. Explore our new temporary exhibit which highlights the history and many traditions of the Winter Carnival through stories\, archival footage\, and artifacts. \nUnique to Winterlude\, this temporary exhibit will be on display in the Diefenbunker’s Cafeteria for the duration of the festival.
