Wiseman is an assistant professor (teaching stream) in the Department of History at the University of Waterloo. His research and teaching concentrate on the history of twentieth-century Canada\, with special emphasis on the development of science and medical research ethics. He is the author of Frontier Science: Northern Canada\, Military Research\, and the Cold War\, 1945–1970 (UTP\, 2024) and co-editor of Silent Partners: The Origins and Influence of Canada’s Military-Industrial Complex (UBC Press\, 2023). With an eye to understanding the social and political dynamics of science\, Wiseman’s publications examine the complex dimensions of military- and state-sponsored research conducted at government\, private\, and academic institutions. This talk examines Canada’s role\, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa\, exploring the connections between race and the battle for allegiances between East and West. Canada’s peacekeeping legacy will be addressed.  \nAbout the speaker\n \nDr. Kevin Spooner  \nKevin Spooner is Professor of North American Studies and History at Wilfrid Laurier University\, where he is also the Director of the Laurier Centre for the Study of Canada. Kevin received his MA and PhD in Canadian History from Carleton University\, after also studying at Trent and Queen’s Universities. Contributing to the development of North American Studies at Laurier\, Kevin served as program coordinator from 2009 to 2014 and currently teaches core courses for North American Studies and upper-year courses in aspects of the history of Canadian foreign policy for the History department. His research expertise is in the history of Canadian foreign policy\, particularly Canada’s contribution to international peacekeeping and Canadian relations with Africa. Participate in these historic activities\, with a modern twist — snow sculpting\, snow painting\, or traversing the snowy trails of the scenic bunker hillside. Warm up indoors with free hot chocolate or by exploring a temporary exhibit highlighting the traditions of the Winter Carnival through stories\, videos\, and artifacts. \nOutdoor activities are free. Keep an eye out for a special visitor looking to collect the eggs they left behind. \nHop on over to the Diefenbunker — we’re egg-cited to see you! \nDate: Saturday\, April 4\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, with designated entry time slots \n\nEntry time slots are every 15 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.\nThe last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m.\nPlease arrive during your scheduled entry time.
