DESCRIPTION:Image: Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Carp — Winter Carnival 1980 \nDelight in winter traditions with snow sculpting\, tug of war\, and a temporary exhibit on the Diefenbunker’s historic Winter Carnival. \nDuring its time as a military base\, the Diefenbunker held an annual Winter Carnival. Participate in these historic activities\, with a modern twist — snow sculpting\, snow painting\, or traversing the snowy trails of the scenic bunker hillside. Warm up indoors with free hot chocolate or by exploring a temporary exhibit highlighting the traditions of the Winter Carnival through stories\, videos\, and artifacts. \nOutdoor activities are free. The temporary exhibit is included in the cost of museum admission. \nReserve tickets \n\nParticipez à des traditions hivernales comme sculpture sur neige et tir à la corde en apprenant à propos du carnaval d’hiver historique du Diefenbunker. \nÀ l’époque où il servait de base militaire\, le Diefenbunker organisait un carnaval d’hiver annuel. Participate in our scavenger hunt for colourful Easter eggs and flowers\, get creative with a butterfly or bunny craft\, decorate an egg to take home\, and enjoy fun games and other activities. \nOur groundhog Bunker Buddy\, Pudge\, has brought a furry friend! Keep an eye out for a special visitor looking to collect the eggs they left behind. \nHop on over to the Diefenbunker — we’re egg-cited to see you! \nDate: Saturday\, April 4\, 2026 \nTime: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\, with designated entry time slots \n\nEntry time slots are every 15 minutes beginning at 10:00 a.m.\nThe last entry time is 2:00 p.m. and the museum closes at 3:00 p.m.\nPlease arrive during your scheduled entry time. If you miss your entry time\, you may need to wait outside the museum due to capacity limits.\n\nAdmission: $13.65 per person; Infants 2 and under are free.* \n\nTickets must be purchased in advance\, as there are designated entry time slots and limited spots available.\nParking is always free!\n\n*Prices exclude taxes and host processing fees. Advance registration is required to receive the Zoom link.\n>> Includes a presentation followed by an audience Q&A.\n>> Session will be recorded for educational purposes and made available after the event. \n>> REGISTER NOW\nOverview\nTo mark Pride Month in the National Capital Region\, this event will include a look at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights exhibition Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada’s LGBT Purge\, presented by its Curator\, followed by a panel discussion with LGBT Purge survivors from the Rainbow Veterans of Canada. \nThis event is hosted in collaboration with the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum. \nAbout the speakers \nScott de Groot is a curator\, historian\, and educator\, with a PhD in History. He was the lead curator on the exhibition Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada’s LGBT Purge at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.  \n \nGloria Dawn Halvorsen is a Saint John\, NB-based musician\, sound engineer\, and human rights advocate dedicated to creating positive community change. \nBeyond her music\, Gloria is a powerhouse in community building and LGBTQ2S+ advocacy. As a Royal Canadian Navy veteran (1984–1987) and member of the Rainbow Veterans of Canada\, she works to raise awareness about the LGBT Purge. Her trailblazing advocacy for trans rights includes serving as a delegate to the Canadian Human Rights Commission Round Table and speaking at institutions like Dalhousie Medical School and the UNB Faculty of Law. Through leadership roles with organizations like UBU Atlantic and PFLAG\, she has provided vital safety\, transition support\, and sensitivity training across New Brunswick. \n \nJen Laird was born into a military family and grew up on a farm in rural Ontario\, with her parents and 3 brothers.  After graduating high school in 1980\, she immediately enlisted in the military\, however it wasn’t until 1983 that an opening finally became available for Military Police (MP). \nShe finished her basic training in Cornwallis and went to CFB Borden for MP training\, excelling in all courses and was set to graduate at the top of her class. Two weeks before graduation\, Jen was unceremoniously escorted out of class without explanation. After 5 nightmarish months of isolation\, interrogation and psychological evaluations\, she was purged in April of 1984 with a diagnosis of “Homosexuality”. Jen kept this secret ‘shame’ to herself until 2019. \nToday\, Jen lives in Ottawa with her partner of 20 years and their two spoiled cats\, Kevin and Stewart. \n \nDanny MacKinnon grew up in the Halifax area\, where he first enrolled in the militia during High School. Joining the regular force as an Administration Clerk for ten years before being purged while posted to the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff in London\, England. Pierre has toured his productions across Canada and abroad to Ireland and New Zealand\, and he has also worked extensively in film\, television\, and radio. \nPeter Haworth has performed for forty years throughout Canada\, acting on stage\, in film and television\, and as a voice actor\, including taking on major roles as King Lear\, Mark Antony\, and Tolstoy.
