Diefenbunker Group Tours

Looking for somewhere different to bring your group? The Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum has been named Canada’s most significant Cold War site for visitors interested in culture and history. This National Historic Site of Canada is an underground nuclear bunker built in secrecy during the height of the Cold War, located just 35 km from Ottawa. As the Central Emergency Headquarters, it was meant to house the top officials of the government and military during the risk of nuclear attack.

Tours of this unique facility take visitors through recreations of government rooms, living quarters, and cryptographic areas. Some of the focal points include the Prime Minister’s suite, the War Cabinet Room, the CBC Radio studio, and the Emergency Government Situation Centre.

Guided tours can be booked Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tours are offered in English or French and last 60 minutes (45 minute or 90 minute long tours are available upon request).

Note:

  • 10 or more people are required to make a group tour reservation
  • We can accommodate groups of up to 120 people
  • We require a minimum of 2 weeks notice for all bookings

Evacuation Distance: Paranoia & Preparedness, the Diefenbunker’s Canadian Signature Experience

Experience the tension and tumult of nuclear threat as you journey deep into a 100,000 square foot underground bunker built in secrecy by the Canadian Government during the height of the Cold War. Explore rooms built to run Canada’s emergency government: the Prime Minister’s suite with its single bed, the War Cabinet Room, a period operating room, and broadcast centre.

On this two-hour guided group tour, visitors will carry out each step of the official 11 Steps to Survival guide issued to citizens by the Canadian Government during the Cold War era. Learn about radioactive fallout, how to take shelter, and survive on army rations. Have your photo taken in the iconic Blast Tunnel. Sit in the cafeteria and be “treated” to your own military ration pack. Listen to an emergency broadcast from the Canadian Broadcasting Centre studio. Touch 1960s-era typewriters and phones, and imagine life in the aftermath of nuclear annihilation.

  • The Bunker requires a minimum of 2 weeks advance notice for bookings.

Note: Admission for tour operators and bus drivers is complimentary but does not include individual copies of the “11 Steps” book or take-away ration packs.

Bus Tour – Step back in time…

This unique group package introduces you to two national historic sites just thirty minutes west of Ottawa.

First Stop – the Diefenbunker
Venture on tour in the 100,000 square foot underground facility and discover what’s hiding away in the nooks of this once top-secret government lair! Then eat lunch in the authentic retro cafeteria provided by a local caterer.

Second Stop- Mississippi Valley Textile Museum
Explore the tradition behind the region’s fabrics at the former Rosamond Woolen Company, where working machinery still chimes during demonstrations. Learn the process of making textiles, “from sheep to shawl”, then enjoy some tea and dessert, followed by shopping in charming Almonte.

Itinerary:

  • 10:15am – Arrive at the Diefenbunker
  • 10:30am – Start tour (1 hour)
  • 11:30am – Cold War Store and lunch in the cafeteria
  • 12:30pm – Departure
  • 1:00pm – Arrive at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum to start tour (1 hour)
  • 2:00pm – Dessert and tea
  • 2:30pm – Shopping in the picturesque village of Almonte
  • 3:30pm – Departure (flexible)
